It is typically three sections played in a classical form known as a rondo: A, B, A, C, A. Heitor Villa-Lobos (HI-toh Vi-la LOW-bush [note that Villa-Lobos is Brazilian and although Villa-Lobos is a Spanish surname, it is pronounced using Portuguese rules of pronounciation]) wrote a number of works in the Choro format, including a few for orchestras. This is the first of that series, and is written for his favorite of all instruments, the guitar. The piece is known as Choro No. 1 and also Choro Tipico (typical Choro). It is his best known work for the guitar and is quite popular among all lovers of guitar music. Villa-Lobos dedicated this piece to the Brazilian composer and pianist Ernesto Nazareth. Nazareth is known as the Scott Joplin of Brazil. Some of his most famous piano music has been recorded as classical guitar duets by Charlie Byrd and Laurindo Almeida, and Carlos Barboza Lima and Sharon Isbin. I had the pleasure of meeting the great maestros, Laurindo Almeida and Rey de la Torre. In separate conversations with both of these gentlemen, they told me that Villa-Lobos had confided in them that there was a mistake on the original manuscript. Instead of a tempo of 1/4 = 90, it should have been 1/4 = 60. So contrary to most recorded versions, I am showing it as these maestros taught me. There are several instances where I have changed the location on the fretboard of passages to facilitate the following move. Measure 5: For a very neat variation, instead of just playing the F# and E together, play a chord with the E, F#, open G, open B. It is a sound that Villa-Lobos is noted for, and I'm sure that he'd approve. Measure 40: This is a really difficult stretch. Instead of playing this as D7, I play it as a D9 with a 1/2 barre on the 5th fret. Measure 57: This is a common voicing of a barred 6-string chord found in much of Villa-Lobos' guitar works. The RH fingering is P on the 6th and 5th strings, I on the 3rd string, and A on the 1st string. Then arpeggiate it. Some guitarists just brush through all six strings.
